The Republic of Haiti is a country which shares the island Española with the Dominican Republic. The capital city of Haiti is Port au Prince, and it has a population of more than 8 million inhabitants, making it one of the most densely populated parts of the Caribbean.

Before independence Haiti was a French colony, and formerly it was a Spanish Colony. This was the first place to abolish slavery, and was the first nation of black people to claim independence.

This island depends on tourism, although compared to other Caribbean countries the sector is not so developed. The national languages are Haitian Creole and French. Spanish is also widely spoken.
